| Introduction: | Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of respiratory tract infections in infants and the elderly. The RSV G protein is a glycosylated membrane protein with an extracellular ectodomain containing a central conserved domain (CCD) characterized by four highly conserved cysteine residues. This CCD includes a CX3C chemokine motif (aa 182–186) that mediates viral attachment to CX3CR1-bearing cells. The G protein initiates infection by binding to cell surface heparan sulfate. Additionally, secreted G protein functions as an antigen decoy and modulates leukocyte activity via Fcgamma receptors, aiding immune evasion. Unlike other paramyxovirus attachment proteins, RSV G lacks hemagglutinating and neuraminidase activities. |
