| Introduction: | Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), an orthopoxvirus. The B6R host-range protein is an outer envelope protein on extracellular enveloped virions (EEV). Homologous to vaccinia virus complement control protein B5, it negatively regulates complement activation. This 42-kDa glycoprotein contains four short consensus repeat (SCR) domains. B5 is a primary target for neutralizing antibodies and is vital for viral morphogenesis, trafficking, and EEV production. Conserved across orthopoxviruses, antibodies against B5 protect hosts from vaccinia challenge by neutralizing EEVs, though the mechanism remains defined. |
