| Introduction: | Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), an orthopoxvirus. The highly conserved A35R gene encodes a hydrophobic acidic protein with little homology outside poxviruses, suggesting a unique virulence mechanism. A35R may interfere with antigen processing, presentation, or apoptosis regulation in infected cells. Its function appears necessary for growth in specific cell types, such as macrophages. A35R localizes to viral DNA factories and has been identified as a constitutive transcriptional activator in yeast two-hybrid studies. |
