| Introduction: | Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE-2) is a zinc metalloprotease and integral membrane protein belonging to the ACE family, which comprises somatic and germinal types. As a carboxypeptidase, ACE-2 cleaves Angiotensin I to Angiotensin 1-9 and Angiotensin II to Angiotensin 1-7. It also efficiently hydrolyzes dynorphin-13 and apelin-13. ACE-2 is highly expressed in the heart, kidney, and testis, with moderate levels in the colon, ovary, and small intestine. Unlike classical ACEs, its activity is not inhibited by lisinopril or captopril. ACE-2 plays a potential role in cardiac function regulation. |
