| Introduction: | Anterograde axonal transport of Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is essential for spreading the virus from latent ganglia to epithelial tissues for replication. This transport process is initiated by the viral membrane proteins gE/gI and US9, which facilitate virion movement from the cytoplasm to proximal axon segments. The gE/gI complex is also significant for cell-to-cell spread in cultured neurons and epithelial cells forming extensive junctions, such as keratinocytes and HEC-1A cells. |
