• Introduction: Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), of the Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily, are critical pathogens causing severe disseminated infections in vulnerable populations. The viral genome encodes multiple glycoproteins including gB, gC, gD, gE, gG, gH, and gI, with nucleotide analysis suggesting additional ones. Glycoproteins B, D, and H are indispensable for HSV infection. The function of gD in the viral replication cycle has been characterized through depletion and blockade studies.
