• Introduction: Anterograde axonal transport of Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is crucial for viral spread from latent ganglia to epithelial tissues for progeny production. The membrane proteins gE/gI and US9 facilitate this transport mechanism, moving virions from the cytoplasm to proximal axon segments. Additionally, the gE/gI complex promotes cell-to-cell viral transmission in cultured neurons and specific epithelial cells with extensive junctions, such as human endometrial HEC-1A cells and keratinocytes.
