| Introduction: | Feline coronavirus (FCoV), an enveloped positive-sense RNA virus, is a common pathogen in cats with two pathotypes: feline enteric coronavirus (FECV) and feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV). Infection relies on the interaction between the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the spike (S) protein and host cell receptors. The S protein determines cell tropism, induces neutralizing antibodies, and regulates cell entry. It is considered the main driver of viral tropism and virulence changes. Historical serotype classification based on antigenic differences underscores the importance of the S protein in FCoV pathogenesis. |
