It is caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV), a large, complex icosahedral DNA virus of the Asfarviridae family. The p72 protein serves as the major capsid protein of ASFV and is a crucial target for diagnostic and vaccine development. Studies indicate that p72 is a dominant antigen in infected pigs and is widely utilized as a marker for diagnosing infection.
