• Introduction: Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE-2) is a zinc metalloprotease and integral membrane protein of the ACE family, which includes somatic and germinal types. Functioning as a carboxypeptidase, ACE-2 cleaves angiotensins I and II, converting angiotensin I to angiotensin 1-9 and angiotensin II to angiotensin 1-7. It also efficiently hydrolyzes apelin-13 and dynorphin-13. ACE-2 expression is high in the testis, kidney, and heart, and moderate in the colon, small intestine, and ovary. Classical ACE inhibitors like captopril and lisinopril do not inhibit ACE-2. This enzyme may play a significant role in regulating cardiac function.
