Introduction: | Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF) is a cationic polypeptide and a constituent of α-granules. PDGF is composed of chain A and B linked together by a disulphide bridge. PDGF heterodimers occurs as PDGF-AB and homodimers exists as FDGF-AA, PDGF-BB, PDGF-CC and PDGF-DD). The PDGFB gene is localized to pericytes in the brain and is mapped to human chromosome 7p22.3. Cellular actions of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) include chemoattraction and activation of neutrophils, monocytes, and fibroblasts. PDGF appears to play a crucial role in the cellular response to tissue injury and is critically involved in the pathological progression of atherosclerosis. PDGF stimulates fibroblast proliferation and extracellular matrix production in order to facilitate tissue repair. |
